Quick answer

Use the material name to choose the route:

  • Hempen Cloth, Leather, Tempered Iron, Fine Silk Cloth, and Tamahagane: equipment and Hozuki Pouch enhancement.
  • Power Stones: basic skill enhancement, including Deflect and Chain Issen.
  • Oni Stones: special-skill enhancement.

Do not spend one type as if it were another. Check the next skill or equipment cost before using a rare reward.

Choose what to spend

  1. Open Early Skills and Upgrades and choose the problem you want to solve.
  2. Check whether the upgrade consumes Power Stones, Oni Stones, Red Souls, Hempen Cloth, Leather, Tempered Iron, Fine Silk Cloth, or Tamahagane.
  3. Check the matching mission route before buying from the shop.
  4. Keep the two stone types in separate notes or inventory checks.
  5. Spend only after the prerequisite mission is available.

Shop or mission first?

Use the shop when the price and stock solve the immediate upgrade. Use mission rewards when the story or side-quest route is already in front of you. If neither route reaches the required cost, continue the objective before assuming a separate farming loop is necessary.

Material-by-material spending guide

Leather

Leather supports equipment and Hozuki Pouch enhancement. The shop entry is 8,000 currency with stock 6, while named routes such as Kyoto, Corrupted, What Lurks in the Shadows, and In the Light of an Icy Moon also provide Leather. If your current problem is healing capacity, keep the material for the pouch; if the next boss is manageable but equipment damage is lagging, compare the equipment cost at the Spirit Mirror first.

Tempered Iron

Tempered Iron is also listed at 8,000 currency with stock 6 and appears in An Immortal Talent, The Roots of All Evil, and The Light of Vengeance. It is easy to spend it as soon as the shop becomes available, but a mission reward can cover part of the next upgrade. Check the mission handoff before buying all available stock.

Power Stones

Power Stones are the basic-skill currency. The early examples are Deflect and Chain Issen, each costing 2 Power Stones and requiring The Oni’s Apprentice. Absorb Souls While Attacking and Flat-Out Sprint also cost 2 Power Stones and require A Strength in Refuge. If you are choosing between them, use the failure-based order: survival first, Issen conversion second, resource flow or traversal third, unless the current route makes another problem clearly more urgent.

Oni Stones

Oni Stones support special skills and Oni Armaments. Mission routes include A Strength in Refuge, The Roots of All Evil, and Patching up the Pouch, but a first run does not provide enough to complete every Oni Gauntlet upgrade. This is a planning fact, not a reason to restart. Spend on the special skill or armament that changes your next encounter, then use New Game Plus for the remaining collection and upgrades.

Hempen Cloth, Fine Silk Cloth, and Tamahagane

These three materials belong to the equipment and Hozuki Pouch branch, not the Power Stone or Oni Stone skill currencies. The shop lists Hempen Cloth at 3,000 currency with stock 4, Fine Silk Cloth at 10,000 with stock 2, and Tamahagane at 10,000 with stock 2. Their named mission rewards are therefore worth checking before buying the full shop stock: Fine Silk Cloth appears in A Strength in Refuge, A Tempest at the Temple, Patching up the Pouch, The Roots of All Evil, To Live is to Suffer, What Lurks in the Shadows, Ace Archer: Nijo-jo Castle, and The Blessed Man; Tamahagane appears in Bloodbath on the Bridge, In the Light of an Icy Moon, The Curse of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope, To Live is to Suffer, the three named Ace Archer routes, and The Light of Vengeance.

If the next equipment upgrade is blocked by one of these materials, check the matching mission gate first. The shop is a gap-filler, not proof that a route reward has been missed.

Mission reward route

MissionMaterial decision
The Oni’s ApprenticeStart the Power Stone skill branch after the training route.
A Strength in RefugeCheck the new skill tier and preserve Power Stones or Red Souls for the next choice.
Patching up the PouchApply the Oni Cloth reward to the Hozuki Pouch before returning to combat.
Kyoto, CorruptedUse the Leather and Power Stone reward at the next mirror.
The Roots of All EvilAdd Tempered Iron and Oni Stone to the planned equipment/special-skill budget.
The Light of VengeanceCompare the Tempered Iron reward with the current equipment cost.
A Tempest at the TempleKeep the Fine Silk Cloth, Power Stone, and Oni Stone reward separate.

A no-waste spending routine

  1. Identify the next skill, equipment, or pouch upgrade.
  2. Write down its material family and quantity.
  3. Check whether the next mission or chest already rewards that family.
  4. Buy only the shop amount that closes the gap.
  5. Return to the Spirit Mirror and spend after the upgrade is actually available.

This prevents three common errors: buying Leather when the actual need is Power Stones, spending Oni Stones as if they were basic currency, and leaving a mission reward unused because the player never returned to the Spirit Mirror. Use Items for broad item purpose and Skills for the branch decision.

When the required material is still short, keep progressing the named mission route before inventing a farming loop. The game distributes many materials through story and side-quest rewards.

How to avoid a material mistake

The most common error is not a hidden location. It is spending the correct-looking resource on the wrong branch. Power Stones and Oni Stones are both upgrade resources, but they do not answer the same problem. Leather and Tempered Iron are both equipment-related, but the next mission reward may make one shop purchase unnecessary. Red Souls also appear in the upgrade conversation, but they are a currency for purchases such as Issen Power 1 rather than a substitute for either stone type.

Use this short check before buying an upgrade:

  1. Name the upgrade: skill, equipment, Hozuki Pouch, or Oni Armament.
  2. Name the resource: Hempen Cloth, Leather, Tempered Iron, Fine Silk Cloth, Tamahagane, Power Stone, Oni Stone, or Red Souls.
  3. Check the prerequisite mission and whether it is complete.
  4. Compare the required amount with the next named reward.
  5. Spend only the amount that fixes the current bottleneck.

Why New Game Plus matters

Oni Stones are not a promise that every special branch can be completed immediately. The available first-run supply is limited for a full Oni Gauntlet plan, so a player who spends every stone on the first attractive option may still need a later run. Keep the remaining goal visible, finish the normal story, and use New Game Plus for the branch that remains. This is a better completion plan than repeatedly farming a route that does not provide the required material.

The same principle applies to collection cleanup. A late reward, a gated mission, or a post-story entry can make an early total look incomplete. Check the gate and category before deciding that a material or achievement is permanently missed.
