Quick answer
Read the current objective before leaving the area. Match the named Kyoto location, follow the marker or visible interaction, and stop when the objective updates. If the next step is a boss, item, puzzle, or choice, use the focused guide instead of forcing all details into the route page.
Route checkpoints
| What you see | What to do | Open next |
|---|---|---|
| A named Kyoto location | Travel to the marker and look for the objective interaction | Missions |
| A mirror, gate, or map prompt | Check whether the interaction changes access or advances the objective | Beginner Guide |
| A Rift or mini-boss | Clear the combat task, then check the updated objective | Combat |
| A named boss | Learn the first cue before rebuilding your character | Bosses |
| A chest, mask, stone, or hidden path | Decide whether to collect it now or return later | Collectibles |
| A choice prompt | Stop before confirming if you want to preserve optionality | Choices and Endings |
Early route context
The Kiyomizu area is a useful orientation checkpoint. Use the location name and objective text together; an image can help you recognise the scene, but it is not a replacement for a room-by-room map.

When the route reaches a combat objective, learn the encounter before moving on. The first goal is to survive the exchange and identify the next destination, not to clear every optional task during the same pass.

Late-story route context
Later scenes can include story and ending context. Use Choices and Endings when a decision matters and Completion when you are planning cleanup.

If the route stalls
- Read the objective again and identify its verb.
- Search the named area for the interaction, not every nearby room.
- If an enemy encounter is still active, finish or leave the fight before interacting.
- Check Missions for the exact handoff.
- If the objective has become a collection or choice question, switch pages and keep the route bookmarked.
Keep route and cleanup separate
Follow the story route first when you want momentum. At each area transition, check Collectibles for mysteries, Hidden Treasures, and Oni Armaments, and check Achievements if the objective can affect a challenge.

Use the in-game map to confirm the current district and nearby Spirit Mirror before opening a detailed route. The map helps with orientation; the mission objective still determines which landmark or interaction advances the story.
Area-by-area route anchors
Rokudo-chinnoji Temple and Eastern Kyoto
The first major route sends Musashi to Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, where the game establishes Takamura, Okuni, the Oni Gauntlet, the Spirit Mirror, and the Hozuki Pouch. When the objective says to speak with Takamura or Okuni, return to the temple area instead of continuing down the street. After the Rift encounter, speak with both characters before using the Spirit Mirror to travel onward. The next route is not unlocked by clearing random Genma; it advances through the named conversation and mirror interaction.
Eastern Kyoto becomes the main hub for later side content. Keep its Spirit Mirrors active and use them as return anchors for Hidden Treasures, Chance Encounters, and short collection detours. If a street looks empty, check the story gate first. A missing NPC or dog is often a progression condition, not a failed search.
For A Haunted Distraction, use the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror as the starting anchor, then follow the corrupted route toward Yasaka Shrine. Clear the Malice plants and surrounding Genma, seal both Rifts, and expect a Dohatsu-ten encounter after the second seal. The mission log may show one Seal the Rifts objective even though the route has two field interactions; use Missions for the reward and handoff, then switch to Bosses when the encounter begins.
Oni Refuge entrance: open the locked courtyard gate
For the focused route, see Oni Refuge Entrance — Locked Gate Route.
During A Strength in Refuge, the entrance route has two separate obstacles. Reaching the first building does not open the courtyard gate:
- Go around the building beside the locked entrance, climb the outside ladder, and enter through the small upper window.
- Drop inside, leave the building, and turn left toward the second closed gate.
- Follow the fence to the broken section on the left side of that gate.
- Aim through the gap at the padlock on the far side and shoot it with the Oni Bow.
- Walk back to the gate, open it, and continue into the well courtyard.
If the gate still appears locked, check that you are aiming through the broken fence rather than trying to reach the courtyard from the front. After the gate opens, follow the Enter the well objective; the route does not end at the first window.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple
The Kiyomizu route combines travel, red Malice barriers, loot boxes, a Hozuki plant, spider threads, a raised platform, and multiple combat gates. Before crossing a barrier, collect the obvious item on the current side and activate the nearby Spirit Mirror. The route later branches into Sasaki Ganryu, the Oni Refuge, and Daidara. If you are lost, identify which of those three objectives is currently visible; searching for the boss before completing the thread or platform step sends you to the wrong section.
The second spider-thread route also contains The Two Celestials. Follow the thread into the cave, defeat the spider, and open the entangled chest before returning to the gate. This armament is useful for the later large-target stun window, so it is worth collecting during the route rather than treating it as unrelated cleanup.
Gojo Street and Kennin-ji
The middle route moves between Gojo Street, the Kennin-ji temple, and later bridge objectives. Use the Spirit Mirror before a named boss and spend the materials that address the fight you are about to enter. At Gojo-ohashi Bridge, Benkei’s armour is part of the route solution: use Oni Strength six times to break the armour pieces before treating the fight as a normal health race. After the bridge, the story returns to Rifts and temple preparation; do not assume every newly visible street interaction belongs to the current objective.

The Spirit Mirror prompt is a useful checkpoint: refresh recovery, confirm the next objective, and then continue through the named route instead of wandering through every visible street.
Nijo-jo Castle and the Underground Laboratory
What Lurks in the Shadows is the important collection gate. Investigate Nijo-jo Castle, follow the Nue route, then continue through the underground laboratory. The blade-trap room, four thread spools, mask door, missing key, Byakue option, paired Nue fight, and Greater Nue all belong to the same broad route. If a chest seems unreachable, check whether the objective has moved to the next laboratory level rather than repeating the first room.
After this mission, Lion Dogs and Mysteries of Kyoto become available. Return to Eastern Kyoto only after the story gate is complete, then use the Collectibles page for cleanup.
Underground Laboratory mask puzzle
For the focused solution, see Mask Puzzle Solution — 3-4-1-2 Order.
The mask puzzle is inside What Lurks in the Shadows, in Underground Laboratory, Underground Level 3. Stand facing the locked cage and shoot the four hanging masks above it from left to right in this order:
| Shot | Target position from the left |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3 |
| 2 | 4 |
| 3 | 1 |
| 4 | 2 |
When the cage opens, collect the Unsettling Mask from the altar. Then return to the earlier Spirit Mirror area and use the mask at the matching face-shaped door. The paper-screen masks provide the clue, but they are not the four targets; confusing those two sets is the usual reason the sequence appears not to work.
Route recovery table
| You are stuck at… | Check this first | Then open… |
|---|---|---|
| A red barrier | The current mission and whether the area’s enemies or Rift are cleared | Missions |
| A platform or cave | The active spider thread or route objective | Missions |
| An arena | Whether the objective names a boss, stamina, armour, or weak point | Bosses |
| A missing side NPC | The story gate for the Chance Encounter or Hidden Treasure | Hidden Treasures |
| A collection item after a boss | Whether the zone is now liberated and the map has updated | Collectibles |
The safest session rhythm
Start at a Spirit Mirror, read the objective, travel to the named area, and finish the smallest interaction that updates the prompt. Pick up items on the direct route, but mark a separate detour instead of stopping the story for every chest. When a boss appears, switch to the Boss page; when a choice appears, pause before confirming; when the route ends, return to the mirror and spend only after the next objective is known.
At the end of a route, confirm the objective update before fast travelling. This prevents returning to an area whose story gate has not yet opened.
