FAQ

How many collectibles are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
The complete checklist has 274 entries across eleven categories: 36 Lion Dogs, 23 Genma Notes, 18 Chance Encounters, 8 Mysteries of Kyoto, 7 Oni Armaments, 9 Hozuki Pouches, 15 Charms, 54 Power Stones, 54 Oni Stones, 25 Fine Silk Cloths, and 25 Tamahagane.
Why are there no Lion Dogs on my map?
Lion Dogs unlock after What Lurks in the Shadows. Dogs in another area may still wait until that area is liberated and its boss is defeated.
Are any collectibles missable?
The current completion route allows free-roam before the final point of no return and returns you to cleanup after the ending. Genma Note No. 23 is deliberately post-story, so collect it after the final boss.
Which collectibles should I prioritise?
Use Oni Vision upgrades and route-based materials first, then clean up Lion Dogs, Genma Notes, Mysteries, Charms, and the dedicated Hidden Treasure and Armament sets.
Is there a complete interactive map?
Do not assume every zone has a complete map. Use the area names and route anchors below, then use the dedicated pages for Hidden Treasures and Oni Armaments.

Quick answer

There are 274 collectible entries across eleven categories. Do not treat them as one list: Lion Dogs and Mysteries have story gates, Genma Notes are not all marked like normal map pickups, the five Hidden Treasures are a shrine-to-landmark chain, and Oni Stones are not sufficient to fully upgrade the Oni Gauntlet in one run.

Lion Dogs: why the map can look empty

The Lion Dog set is gated. Finish What Lurks in the Shadows before using the map as a checklist. In another region, the dogs may not appear until that map is liberated and its final boss is defeated. The six-skin thresholds are at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 dogs; do not confuse the Lion Dog charm with the Lion Dog collection.

Dogs rescuedSkin unlocked
6Sakurahime
12Shishioh
18Myogo
24Ura-giri
30Mooncrossed
36Kikoku

If the counter is moving but a skin is not visible, check the cosmetic or costume list rather than searching for another dog. The Lion Dog charm is a separate bonus item and does not count toward these thresholds.

Genma Notes: check the post-story location

Genma Notes are the collection group most likely to remain incomplete because they are not all shown as ordinary map pickups. There are 22 during the story and a final post-story note:

  1. Defeat Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
  2. Reload or continue the completed save.
  3. Travel to the well behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple in Eastern Kyoto.
  4. Collect Genma Note No. 23 there.

Genma Note checklist

Use the enemy name as the checklist label. The 23 entries below tell you what to look for; for a room-by-room route, use the current area objective and the dedicated collection sections.

If the enemy list is complete but the achievement count is still short, check the post-story Yoshitsune note before replaying earlier areas. That is the one entry in this set with a separately identified after-ending route.

What the Genma Note list tells you

The 23 Genma Notes answer two different collection questions: which enemy or character a note belongs to, and where the pickup is found. All 23 note names are tied to a named Genma or character. Ten also have a named-character route link; the remaining 13 are checklist entries without a room-by-room pickup landmark on this page.

A long-form collection walkthrough gives visual checkpoints for several early entries and nearby routes—Byakue, Rasho-gan, Daidara, Ifuu, Burai, and Shuten Doji. A second 49-minute Kiyomizu-dera and Oni Refuge walkthrough visibly shows the Hitotsume Sho acquisition screen at about 48:00, so it can confirm that the note was added when the scroll appears in-game. These videos are useful for orientation and acquisition confirmation, but they do not replace a room-by-room route for all 23 notes. Mark the subject when the in-game entry appears, use a named mission or boss route when one is available, and use the area sections for the remaining searches.

A note can therefore be missing even when its enemy has already been defeated. The enemy entry identifies the subject, while the pickup or post-story condition may belong to a separate mission, area, or cleanup route. Open Missions before replaying an earlier arena.

Mysteries and Chance Encounters checklist

These entries are counted alongside ordinary pickups, but they appear through NPCs, story gates, or investigation prompts. Use the exact name in the mission log when a checklist entry is missing.

Mysteries of Kyoto — 8 entries

The Three Worms / Worm-ly WaysThe checklist and mission pages use both names for this entry.
Hanging Monkeys / Some Unfinished Monkey BusinessThe later entry in the Worm-ly Ways chain.

The eight entries stay behind the What Lurks in the Shadows gate in the collection reference. If the area has no mystery prompts yet, finish that story mission first; do not treat an empty early map as a missing pickup.

This list answers “which checklist entry am I missing?” It does not replace the objective route for a named encounter. Open Missions when the entry is present but the next action is unclear, and open Hidden Treasure Locations for the five drawing routes.

Stones and upgrade planning

  • Power Stones: use them for Basic skills. One run provides enough for a complete basic-skill upgrade path when collected thoroughly.
  • Oni Stones: use them for Special skills and Oni Armaments. The full gauntlet upgrade path needs the second-run supply, so do not treat an incomplete first run as a failed collection.
  • Fine Silk Cloths and Tamahagane: keep them for the next Spirit Mirror upgrade instead of spending them blindly on the first available option.

Hidden Treasures and Oni Armaments

Use the focused pages when the player question is a named location rather than a general checklist:

Search problemOpen
“Where is Hidden Treasure No. 3?”Hidden Treasure Locations
“Where do I get Earth Shakers?”Oni Armament Locations
“Which armament helps with stamina or armour?”Oni Armament Locations
“What does this material upgrade?”Upgrade Materials

Mask puzzle interaction in the underground laboratory

For the mask, thread, and laboratory routes, follow the current mission first, then return to the collection table after the gate opens.

A clean collection order

  1. Follow the story until a new area is liberated.
  2. Pick up obvious route items before crossing the next transition.
  3. Finish What Lurks in the Shadows before judging the Lion Dog or Mystery checklist.
  4. Return to Eastern Kyoto and clear the five Hidden Treasures as their gates open.
  5. Use Oni Vision for notes, glyphs, and chests that are not visible from the main path.
  6. Save Oni Stones for the skill or armament that fixes your current combat problem, then use New Game+ for the remaining upgrades.

Gates that explain missing entries

Chance Encounters and Mysteries

These are activities, not ordinary objects waiting on the floor. A Chance Encounter appears through a named NPC and may unlock only after a mission. The five Hidden Treasures are part of this group, which is why a player can have an apparently complete item list while still missing a side-mission entry. Mysteries of Kyoto are investigation or puzzle routes and stay locked until What Lurks in the Shadows. Finish the story gate before deciding that the checklist is broken.

Hozuki Pouches and charms

Hozuki Pouches increase healing capacity and should be tracked separately from charms. A charm changes a passive effect or build choice; it does not automatically add another healing use. When you find a pouch-related material or mission, return to the named NPC or Spirit Mirror to apply it. For charm cleanup, use the pickup and its effect rather than only the area name, because bonus charms from a demo, purchase, or edition are not the same as the 15 world charms.

Stones and equipment materials

Power Stones, Oni Stones, Fine Silk Cloths, and Tamahagane are collection goals with spending consequences. Collecting a stone is not the endpoint: check the next skill branch or Spirit Mirror upgrade before using it. Power Stones support basic skills and are sufficient for a full basic-skill investment in one run when collected thoroughly. Oni Stones support special skills and armaments, and the full Oni Gauntlet upgrade path needs a second-run supply. This is why a first-run count can look incomplete without indicating a missed location.

How to backtrack without losing the route

  1. Return to the nearest unlocked Spirit Mirror.
  2. Check whether the item has a story gate, a boss gate, or a puzzle gate.
  3. Follow the dedicated page if the item is a Hidden Treasure or Oni Armament.
  4. Return to the story objective after the pickup rather than continuing through an unrelated side street.

If the object is not present, advance the gate instead of repeatedly reloading the same room. Lion Dogs may wait for area liberation, Mysteries wait for their story unlock, and Genma Note No. 23 waits until after the final boss.

When to leave an area

Leave the area and continue the story when the remaining item is behind a locked gate, a later boss, or an unopened side mission. Return through the nearest Spirit Mirror after the gate opens. Use Missions for the current task, Items for spending, and Completion after the story.
