Quick answer
First decide what kind of item you have: an upgrade material, collectible, charm, pouch, weapon, or mission object. Then answer five questions: what does it do, where is it obtained, what triggers it, what consumes it, and which upgrade or route uses it? Use this page for the broad item lookup; use the focused pages when the question is only about a route or a material family.

| Should I spend it now? | Skills |
Item lookup table

Spend rule for a first run
Keep one reserve of a scarce material until the next skill or equipment cost is visible. Spend on the upgrade that fixes a repeated problem, not on a branch you cannot yet use. Early Skills and Upgrades lists the clearest early choices.
Item families in practical use
Healing and pouch items
The Hozuki Pouch is the item system most new players notice first. It has limited uses, can be refilled at a Spirit Mirror, and can be supported by Hozuki fruit found along routes. Pouch upgrades are not the same as charm capacity. Patching up the Pouch is the first named repair route; later enhancements can raise the displayed capacity and restorative power. Check the current pouch menu before spending materials because the required stage and cost change as the route advances. If you are short on healing, take the pouch route before buying a damage skill. For the effect comparison and capacity checkpoints, use the Hozuki Pouch Guide.

When a pouch-related objective appears, finish the mission and return to the next Spirit Mirror before spending materials. The reward increases healing capacity; it does not add a charm slot.
Hozuki Pouch effect variants
The nine Hozuki Pouches in the collectible checklist and the five named pouch effects below answer different questions. The checklist counts world pickups; the variant names describe what the equipped pouch does. Do not add the two numbers together.
| Pouch variant | Effect | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Restores a larger chunk of health per use | You need more reliable healing during normal exploration or a boss route. |
| Aggressor | Refills the Oni Power and Reflex gauges by a fixed amount | Your damage plan depends on armaments and Reflex actions. |
| Awakening | Refills the Oni Power and Awakening gauges by a fixed amount | You want to reach Awakening more often. |
| Regeneration | Slowly regenerates health and stamina over time | You can create space and prefer sustained recovery over one large heal. |
| Resistance | Regenerates health and Oni Power over time | You want healing and armament resource recovery in the same loadout. |
Default is the pouch supplied by the early Patching up the Pouch route. Resistance is also listed as a reward on The Way of the Sword and The Ruckus at Rendaino. The other variants should be chosen by effect first; do not replace a working healing plan just because a different pouch has a more aggressive name.
Charms
Charms are passive choices. The effect table below lists 16 named charm effects. Completion uses a separate 15-world-charm target; demo, pre-order, and edition bonuses are extra and should not be counted toward that target.
| Charm | Effect | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Blazing Charm | Stay in the Blazing State longer | You already use Blazing State to finish encounters. |
| Charm of Awakening | Fill the Awakening Gauge faster | You want more frequent Awakening activations. |
| Charm of Dexterity | Fill the Reflex Gauge faster | You are building around Reflex Combos and defensive timing. |
| Charm of Enticement | Increase Genma encounter frequency in Eastern Kyoto | You are farming encounters or related drops. |
| Charm of Oni Power | Fill the Oni Power Gauge faster | You rely on Oni Strength and other Oni Armaments. |
| Charm of Protection | Reduce health lost when attacked | You are learning a boss and taking unavoidable chip damage. |
| Charm of Purification | Reduce damage from Malice | The area or boss repeatedly applies Malice. |
| Charm of Stamina | Refill the Stamina Gauge faster | Your failures come from running out of stamina before a break. |
| Charm of the Healer | Increase health restored when healing | You need each Hozuki use to recover more health. |
| Charm of Zeal | Fill the Blaze Gauge faster | You want to reach Blazing State sooner. |
| Fencer’s Strength Charm | Increase regular attack power | You solve fights through normal sword damage. |
| Inner Strength Charm | Increase Issen and Break Issen damage | You can reliably land Issen windows and want a burst build. |
| Lovable Charm: Kubi Akari | Trigger a Soul absorption bonus after a shorter chain | You are farming Souls or setting up gauge use. |
| Oni Strength Charm | Increase Oni Armament power | A boss weakness or armour break depends on an armament. |
| Reaper’s Charm | Increase red Souls absorbed | You need more red Souls for basic skill progression. |
| Sadist’s Strength Charm | Deal more damage to burning, ablaze, or oil-soaked enemies | Your loadout consistently applies those states. |
For a first playthrough, start with Charm of Protection, Charm of the Healer, or Charm of Stamina if survival is the bottleneck. Switch to Inner Strength Charm after Issen timing is reliable, or Oni Strength Charm when an armament solves the current boss mechanic. The “best” charm is tied to the failure type, not a universal tier list.
Materials and stones
Leather and Tempered Iron are equipment and pouch materials. Power Stones support basic skills such as Deflect and Chain Issen. Oni Stones support special skills and Oni Armaments. Red Souls are a separate currency used for purchases such as Issen Power 1. The safest inventory habit is to write the material name beside the next upgrade rather than assuming every glowing pickup has the same use.
The A Haunted Distraction route is a useful material source: its mission rewards are Hempen Cloth ×2, Tempered Iron ×2, and Power Stone ×2. These are separate from materials dropped while clearing the two Rift route. If you need one of these materials, finish the mission before buying the same item from the shop.
Weapons and armaments
Normal equipment and Oni Armaments are different item families. The armaments have their own missions, chests, and effects. If the search question is “where is this weapon?”, use Oni Armaments. If the question is “what should I spend this material on?”, use Upgrade Materials.
Shop versus route reward
The shop lists Leather and Tempered Iron at 8,000 currency with stock 6. A named mission can provide the same family without using shop currency. Check the story route first, then buy only the missing amount. This is especially useful before equipment or Hozuki Pouch upgrades because a mission reward may arrive after the next objective.
| If you need… | Check first | Then decide |
|---|---|---|
| More healing | Pouch capacity, Hozuki fruit, Spirit Mirror refill | Upgrade the pouch before damage if survival is the issue. |
| A basic combat skill | Power Stones and the prerequisite mission | Deflect or Chain Issen by failure type. |
| A special skill or armament upgrade | Oni Stones | Preserve the stock for the branch that affects the next encounter. |
| Equipment enhancement | Leather or Tempered Iron | Compare mission reward and shop stock. |
| A collection reward | Hidden Treasure, note, charm, or dog entry | Use Collectibles rather than the shop list. |
Inventory troubleshooting
If an item appears to be missing, search by its exact name and check whether it is a reward, pickup, shop entry, or mission object. If the item is present but cannot be used, inspect the Spirit Mirror or mission prerequisite. If the number did not increase after a chest, finish the interaction and open the reward screen before leaving. If two sources use different names for the same route, use the in-game item name and the Spirit Mirror or mission as the anchor.
When an item should become its own search
Use the exact item name when the player is trying to locate a reward, confirm a material, or decide whether a resource is safe to spend. Do not treat every pickup as a separate guide. A broad item question belongs here when the player is still classifying the object. A location question belongs in Collectibles when the object is one of the counted world entries. A mission reward belongs in Missions when the player needs the objective, route, and completion condition together.
| Search wording | Best answer page | What this page adds |
|---|---|---|
| “What does this item do?” | Items | Family, purpose, trigger, and next decision |
| “Where is Leather?” | Upgrade Materials | Shop stock, mission rewards, and spending order |
| “Where is the last Lion Dog?” | Collectibles | Area route and category count |
| “What does this mission reward?” | Missions | Objective, route, reward, and timing |
| “Which charm should I use?” | Items or Systems | Effect, current problem, and loadout context |
| “Why cannot I buy this skill?” | Skills or Upgrade Materials | Prerequisite mission and correct material family |
A practical inventory check
Before leaving a Spirit Mirror, look at the next upgrade you can actually purchase, not the most expensive upgrade visible in a later list. Confirm the material family, required amount, and prerequisite. Then decide whether the next mission already supplies part of it. This is especially important for Leather and Tempered Iron because both have shop stock and named mission rewards, while Power Stones and Oni Stones belong to different skill branches.
If you are carrying a charm or bonus item, read its description and decide whether it changes the current fight. A cosmetic sword appearance or edition bonus should not be counted as a missing world collectible. If a pouch reward increases uses or healing, treat it as a capacity upgrade and compare it with a damage purchase only after checking whether survival is your current bottleneck.
